Pope Leo XIV, 71, has suspended his public engagements until October 20 after doctors discovered a small nodule in one of his lungs at a very early stage.
He is expected to be admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Tuesday, October 13, where he will undergo surgery. According to the Vatican, recovery is expected to take approximately one week.
Despite the procedure, the Pope’s planned visit next month to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru is not expected to be affected.
The Pope revealed his diagnosis on Sunday during the Angelus blessing in St. Peter’s Square, thanking the faithful for their support and asking them to pray for him.
