South Korea is investing in the modernization of its military through artificial intelligence and robotics. On Monday, the Ministry of National Defense inaugurated the country’s first military facility dedicated to developing these technologies, with the aim of deploying robots to carry out dangerous tasks on the battlefield.
The facility is located in Pangyo, south of the capital, Seoul, and will be used to train humanoid robots and quadruped robots.
According to the ministry, development will rely on physical AI data and advanced artificial intelligence models.
The robots are expected to be used to transport supplies through hazardous areas, neutralize explosive devices, and clear minefields. The goal is to reduce soldiers’ exposure to life-threatening risks.
The Ministry of National Defense said its long-term objective is to establish an advanced international center for physical artificial intelligence, enabling robots to perceive and interact with their surrounding environment.
