German police have arrested a 48-year-old man suspected of carrying out a series of sabotage attacks targeting the country’s electricity network after several days on the run.
The suspect was detained near the Weisweiler power plant in western Germany on Tuesday. Police said he was carrying explosives at the time of his arrest.
Officers also discovered a tent hidden in nearby bushes containing additional explosive material.
German media have identified the suspect as Daniel V. He is believed to have written letters claiming responsibility for attacks in Brandenburg and Saxony in eastern Germany, as well as North Rhine-Westphalia in the west.
Bomb disposal specialists are examining the explosives, while police are searching the surrounding area for any additional devices that may have been planted.
Investigators had earlier discovered several launching devices near high-voltage power lines close to the Weisweiler plant, along with another letter claiming responsibility.
A series of incidents targeting Germany’s electricity network over the past week have reportedly followed a similar pattern, involving devices used to throw wires across high-voltage cables in an apparent attempt to cause short circuits.
