Two workers have died following an explosion at an old hydroelectric power plant in southern Switzerland, local authorities said.
The incident occurred at a facility in the village of Piotta, in the canton of Ticino. Police said the explosion triggered a fire that engulfed the area where the two employees were working. Both later died from their injuries.
One of the victims was identified as a 55-year-old Swiss citizen, while the identity of the second worker has not yet been released.
The blast caused significant damage to the facility. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine what caused the explosion and establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
The aging hydroelectric plant was undergoing renovation work as part of a broader reconstruction project when the deadly incident occurred.
