A 41-year-old Albanian prisoner has escaped from a hospital in Serres, Greece, in an operation allegedly carried out by accomplices who disguised themselves as police officers and freed him during a medical transfer.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, when the prisoner was being transported from Nigrita Prison to Serres Hospital for a medical examination.
The transport vehicle had arrived in the hospital courtyard, outside the psychiatric ward. The prisoner was accompanied by two officers responsible for his security.
At that point, several alleged accomplices arrived in vehicles resembling police cars. One of the vehicles was reportedly a Nissan Navara equipped with a warning light.
The escorts initially believed they were dealing with an official police intervention. However, the situation quickly escalated when the men exited the vehicles carrying firearms.
According to reports, the armed group disarmed the two escorts and removed the prisoner from the transport vehicle before fleeing the area.
The dramatic escape has drawn comparisons to the popular series “Prison Break,” whose character Michael Scofield is known for carefully planned prison escapes. In this case, authorities suspect the operation was coordinated by the prisoner’s associates, who intervened while he was being taken to the hospital.
Greek reports say the 41-year-old was arrested last year in connection with an attempted murder case in Thessaloniki. He is also allegedly linked to cases involving weapons and drugs.
Following the escape, Greek authorities launched a large-scale operation to locate the prisoner and those believed to have helped him. Investigators are also examining how the group managed to approach the hospital and create the impression that they were carrying out an official police operation.
According to the latest reports, neither the escaped prisoner nor his alleged accomplices had been located.
