If one show emerged as the biggest winner of the 2026 Emmy Awards, it was Apple TV’s horror-comedy “Widow’s Bay.” Released only a few months ago in April, the series finished the awards season with an impressive 14 Emmys.
Six of those awards were handed out during Monday’s main ceremony, including Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as awards for writing and directing in the comedy category. The show also earned acting honors for Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn. Eight additional awards had already been collected during the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies.
So, what is “Widow’s Bay” about?
The series follows Tom Loftis, the mayor of a small island town off the coast of New England, played by Matthew Rhys. Hoping to boost the local economy, he tries to turn the island into a popular tourist destination.
There is just one problem: the locals insist that the island is cursed.
At first, their warnings appear to be nothing more than old folklore and superstition. But once tourists begin arriving, the strange events the residents have been describing for years start becoming frighteningly real.
Apple describes “Widow’s Bay” as a blend of genuine horror and character-driven comedy. That unusual combination was also one of the elements that attracted Rhys to the project.
The actor previously explained that some scenes genuinely frightened him, while others made him laugh out loud. He initially questioned whether such a difficult mix of horror and comedy could actually work.
After its remarkable performance at the 2026 Emmys, however, the series appears to have answered that question decisively.
