Ali Ahmeti: “Democracy Is the Ultimate Test of Political Maturity”

Ali Ahmeti has marked International Day of Democracy with a message highlighting the importance of freedom, pluralism, dialogue and equality in a democratic society.

Ahmeti argued that democracy should not be understood simply as a system of institutions or an electoral process, but as a lasting relationship between citizens and the state, where freedom, dignity and equality must remain non-negotiable.

“Democracy is, above all, the highest test of political maturity,” Ahmeti wrote.

He said that in diverse societies, democracy does not demand uniformity. Instead, it creates space for differences while giving pluralism an institutional voice and recognition.

According to Ahmeti, democracy must become part of society’s culture as well as a standard for institutions, political structures and decision-making processes.

“Lasting peace is built on democracy, while sustainable democracy is built on respect, dialogue and equality,” he said.

Referring to developments across the region and Europe, Ahmeti stressed that the response to today’s challenges should be greater commitment to democracy, dialogue and responsible decision-making.

“This is the path that brings us closer to Europe,” he concluded.
