Kosovo’s Deepest Known Cave Explored in the Accursed Mountains

Kosovo’s deepest cave explored to date has been documented during a speleological research expedition in the “Bjeshkët e Nemuna” National Park.

The expedition was organized by the Kosovo Institute for Nature Protection in cooperation with the Bulgarian Caving Society, with researchers exploring and mapping several caves across the area.

Among the sites examined were Drelaj Cave, Flamuri Cave — also known as Stërqoka Cave — in Hajla, which reaches a depth of 45 meters, the Twin Caves in Bajshë at 35 meters, and the cave at Rrasen e Zogut.

Located at an altitude of around 1,900 meters above sea level, the Rrasen e Zogut cave is currently considered the deepest cave explored in Kosovo.

Researchers have so far explored and mapped approximately 200 meters of the cave. However, they believe it could extend as deep as 500 meters, meaning much of the underground system may still remain undiscovered.

Speleological research at the site is expected to continue next year as experts work to determine the cave’s full depth and explore its remaining passages.
