Houthis Attack Power Station Supplying the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militia carried out a drone attack on an electricity distribution station in Medina, Saudi Arabia, according to the Saudi-led coalition.

Coalition spokesman Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki said the attack took place on Tuesday and targeted the “Taibah” electricity distribution station. One transformer was damaged and knocked out of service as a result of the strike.

Saudi authorities said the attack did not cause any disruption to the wider electricity grid. An examination of the drone debris, they said, confirmed that the Houthis were responsible for the attack.

The targeted facility is among the installations supplying electricity to services at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, one of the holiest sites in Islam.

The Saudi-led coalition accused the Houthis of attempting to provoke Muslim sentiments by targeting facilities connected to Islamic holy sites, and warned that it would continue taking measures to protect them.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, who have intensified attacks against the kingdom in recent weeks.
