Moscow was targeted in an exceptionally large overnight drone attack involving around 650 drones, leaving at least one person dead on the outskirts of the Russian capital.
“Most of them were shot down by air defenses, including 105 intercepted as they approached the capital,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.
According to calculations by the state-run TASS news agency, the attack was the second-largest assault on Moscow in recent months. The Russian capital lies hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border, amid an intensification of attacks between Ukraine and Russia.
A 20-year-old man was killed in a village on the outskirts of Moscow, regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said. He also reported damage to homes in several locations.
Ukrainian drones also targeted a major oil facility in Moscow Oblast during the large-scale attack.
Moscow, which denies deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, has intensified its strikes on Ukrainian territory in recent weeks.
On Sunday, the Russian military warned that it would further “intensify” attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in response to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s pledge to increase Kyiv’s operations against Russian oil refineries.
