Strike Partially Paralyzes Belgium, More Than 100 Flights Canceled

Belgium’s major trade unions have called for two days of protests on Friday and Monday.

The strike is expected to disrupt air and rail travel, as well as a number of public services across the country.

Around 140 flights to and from Brussels Airport are expected to be canceled on Friday.

Charleroi Airport, Belgium’s second-largest airport, plans to operate all scheduled flights.

The national railway company SNCB has announced that fewer trains will be operating from Sunday evening through Monday, as a large number of railway workers are expected to join the strike.

According to service providers, the industrial action is also expected to affect public transportation, education and waste collection, among other services.

The Christian CSC and socialist FGTB unions are jointly organizing the protests in opposition to the government’s budget policies.

Belgium is facing high public debt and has been running a significant budget deficit for years.

Belgium is required to submit its draft budget to the European Commission by October 15.
