Four people were injured Monday morning in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood after a construction crane suddenly collapsed, striking a vehicle on a nearby road and triggering a fire.
The crane operator managed to escape from the cabin moments before the structure came down.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear. The crane fell onto a white car that was traveling along a road beside the construction site.
Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia said the driver noticed the crane falling and managed to move slightly before the structure landed on her vehicle. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The crane also struck a large metal storage container where two workers were inside, leaving them temporarily trapped.
Firefighters carried out a complex rescue operation to free the workers. One member of the team cut through the metal structure to create an opening, while another worked to contain the fire that broke out following the impact.
The two workers were eventually rescued and, along with the crane operator, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Footage from the scene shows the crane operator escaping from the cabin shortly before the structure collapsed. Authorities said he managed to save himself by jumping from the crane at the last possible moment.
Fire crews quickly brought the flames under control and secured the area while rescue teams worked to free those trapped inside the container.
