Kosovo is counting down the days to September 16, as attention turns to the expected decision concerning former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders. Ahead of the date, Pristina has been filled with flags, murals and public activities showing support for the former KLA leaders. From symbolic fires to the “March for Freedom,” one message continues to resonate: a call for justice and freedom.
A mural gradually illuminated to reveal the portraits of the former KLA leaders has become one of the symbols of that anticipation. The light carries a broader message of hope that truth and justice will ultimately prevail.
As September 16 approaches, events and initiatives in support of former KLA leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi have increased across Kosovo.
The mural dedicated to the four men also reflects support for the Kosovo Liberation Army and its wartime struggle, while expressing hope for what supporters consider a just outcome.
Across central Pristina, flags displayed in public squares have added to the atmosphere surrounding the approaching date. With every passing day, attention increasingly turns toward September 16.
Among the initiatives organized by the “Liria ka Emër” platform was “7 Zones, 7 Fires.” Former commanders, KLA veterans and children of fallen fighters gathered around symbolic fires to share stories and memories from the Kosovo war.
Organizers presented the fires as a symbol of light, conveying the message that the KLA represented hope for the people of Kosovo during some of the country’s most difficult years.
Support for the four former KLA leaders has also been displayed through banners and other messages placed in public spaces throughout the capital.
On September 12, the “March for Freedom” will take place in Pristina’s Skanderbeg Square, with organizers calling for broad public participation. Held just days before September 16, the march is expected to once again carry the message of justice and freedom for the former KLA leaders.
Until then, Kosovo continues its countdown — the days, hours, minutes and seconds leading to September 16.
