Vučić Announces He Will Step Down as Serbia’s President on September 27

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he plans to resign from office on September 27, saying he will address the public that evening to thank citizens for their support during his years in office.

“I want to inform you that I will resign as president on September 27. That evening, I will address the citizens and thank them for their support,” Vučić said during a television interview.

He said he had served Serbia and its citizens with dedication and noted that he had spent more time in the presidency than any other Serbian leader since the introduction of the country’s multiparty political system.

During the interview, Vučić also discussed the ongoing student protests and the Student List, claiming that former Democratic Party leader Bojan Pajtić and former party deputy leader Dušan Petrović are politically behind the movement.

He also repeated his claims regarding the alleged use of a “sound cannon” during the March 15, 2025 protest in Belgrade, saying the story was fabricated and that an audio recording released in connection with the incident had been manipulated.

Vučić further accused individuals he claimed were organizing a “revolution” in Serbia from abroad, alleging that their objective was to deepen social divisions and destabilize the country to the point of risking civil conflict.

His resignation announcement comes amid months of political tensions in Serbia, with student demonstrations and clashes between the government and opposition continuing across the country.

Several days earlier, Vučić signed a decree dissolving parliament and scheduled snap parliamentary elections for October 25.
